Less Screen, More Crochet

Sunday, January 27, 2019

I've started crocheting again, and this time for real. I've always wanted to make things with my hands, and to take my eyes off the screen more often.

I'm starting out with coasters because they're almost always the first project any crochet newbie would want to make.

Coasters weren't such a big deal for me before, but now they (kind of) are. I drink tea in the office, so I now find that coasters are definitely useful. What more now that I'm able to make them for myself. I make coasters for others as well, so they can use it in the office or when they drink coffee while studying.

I plan to keep making coasters until I get better and more confident. Then maybe I'll start making beanies and bags and scarves... there's so much I can make, but I'll take it slowly for now.

What I like about crochet is that like painting, it can calm me down and helps me feel more focused and engaged. And there's the wonder of creating something out of repeated patterns. Three loops, two loops, slip stitch, double crochet, 1, 2 3, I just keep going.

I struggled at first with making them too tight. When this would happen, I'd unravel everything.. it's frustrating because I want to make it good as much as possible, but I had to remind myself that I don't always have to do it right the first time. Sometimes I tend to leave it for a while then go back to it when I feel like continuing it. There are times when I'd take a nap, or take a bath, or do laundry first, and finish it after. It works! #LifeLessons

My resource for learning is through Youtube! Here are some great channels:

The Crochet Crowd
NotikaLand - Crochet and Knitting
Bella Coco

Here's to challenging myself to be more creative, and to try new things. I'll be writing about these things as well for sure. ; - )

  1. These are so cute! You're really good at this! I've always thought crocheting was a cute hobby, but I've never tried it myself. Maybe when I have a bit more time I'll try to dabble in this as well.

Looking forward to more of your crochet work! :)

  3. This is such a cute DIY project! While I haven't tried crocheting, I have tried knitting and I just can't get the hang of it haha. Right now, I'm trying to learn how to sew! I've only done a few simple alterations so far, but hope to sew something from scratch in the future :)

    1. I've always thought crochet would be easier since it only needs one needle, but then I wouldn't know with knitting since that's the one I haven't tried yet haha. Maybe sewing is the one for you! :D do go for it, I hope to see some of your works on your blog some day :)

  4. I used to crochet when I was younger, but I always liked knitting and embroidery more. It's so nice to pick up new hobbies though, especially when it helps you to take a step back from the screens and lose track of time in a good way. Great post!
